Words are our primary means of conveying ideas to each other. In conversations about political ideas we often use words with meaning that changes by who is listening. This is a problem which some politicians exploit. To avoid this problem, below is a glossary of what I mean when I use that political term. As a bonus, I include how I feel about that political concept.
Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by expulsion or removal of an embryo or fetus. Abortion occurring without deliberate action is known as spontaneous abortion or "miscarriage", and occurs in roughly 30-40% of all pregnancies and often requires medical attention. Abortion occurring by deliberate action is know as an induced abortion. Common reasons for inducing an abortion are birth-timing and limiting family size, maternal health, an inability to afford a child, domestic violence, lack of support, feelings of being too young, wishing to complete an education or advance a career, and not being able, or willing, to raise a child conceived as a result of rape or incest.
I support unimpeded medical interventions for spontaneous abortion, and legislation that supports induced abortion being safe, legal, and rare.
Anarchism is a political philosophy and movement that seeks to abolish all institutions that perpetuate authority, coercion, or hierarchy (primarily targeting the state and capitalism). Anarchism advocates for the replacement of the state with stateless societies and voluntary free associations.
I reject anarchism.
Authoritarianism is a political system characterized by the use of strong central power to preserve the political status quo and to cause reductions in democracy, separation of powers, civil liberties, and the rule of law. Authoritarianism rejects diverse interest groups competing for influence. Authoritarian regimes may be either autocratic or oligarchic and may be based upon the rule of a single party, the military, or the concentration of power in a single person.
I reject authoritarianism. .
An autocracy is a political regime where a single individual (an autocrat) holds the power, qualified as personal and absolute power. The autocrat's power covers all political, economic, social, and military power. In this political regime the autocrat is not subject to any legal or legislative or constitutional restraints. Governments may also blend elements of autocracy and democracy. Autocrats maintain power through political repression of any opposition and co-optation of other influential or powerful members of society. The general public is controlled through indoctrination, propaganda, and repression of civil liberties. An autocracy may attempt to legitimize itself in the eyes of the public through appeals to political ideology, religion, birthright, or foreign hostility.
I reject autocracy.
Capitalism is an economic system where private individuals or businesses own and control the means of producing goods or services for profit. Capitalism is influenced by market forces like supply and demand. Key features include private property, self-interest, competition, and a limited government role. Captialism offers benefits like economic freedom, growth, and a wide array of products. Potential downsides include monopolies, exploitation, economic inequality, and the risk of economic recessions
I support appropriately regulated capitalism.
Communism is a political system with many diverse variants such as such as anarchist communism, Marxist schools of thought (including Leninism and its offshoots), and religious communism. They have in common a socioeconomic order centered on common ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange that allocates products in society based on need. Communism rejects capitalism. Many "communist governments" are hybrids which embrace autocracy, socialism and elements of democracy and capitalism.
I reject communism.
Democracy is a system of government where power ultimately lies with the people, who either rule directly or through elected representatives. The United States is a representative democracy (a republic). Citizens vote for their government officials.
I embrace Democracy.
Fascism is a far-right, authoritarian, and ultranationalist political ideology and movement. Fascism is characterized by a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition, belief in a natural social hierarchy, subordination of individual interests for the perceived interest of the nation or race, and strong regimentation of society and the economy. Dictators Benito Mussalini and Adolf Hitler were fascist leaders.
I reject fascism.
Federalism is a system of government that divides powers between a national, or federal, government and regional, or state, governments. This division of authority allows both levels of government to exercise sovereignty in some areas while sharing responsibilities in others. Key aspects of federalism include its role in limiting government power by distributing it across different levels, fostering civic engagement by allowing for greater local self-rule, and providing a "laboratory of democracy" where states can experiment with different policies to find what works best for their populations.
I embrace federalism.
Freedom of speech is the right to articulate opinions and ideas without interference, retaliation or punishment from the government. The term "speech" is interpreted broadly and includes spoken and written words as well as symbolic speech (e.g., what a person wears, reads, performs, protests, and more). Free speech is a civil right granted by the Constitution's first amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
I embrace free speech.
The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.
I consider integrity to be essential for good governance.
Kleptocracy, or "rule by thieves," is a form of government where leaders use their political power to enrich themselves and their allies by illegal means. In a kleptocracy, corrupt politicians enrich themselves outside the rule of law, through kickbacks, bribes, and special favors, insider trading, or simply directing state funds to themselves and their associates. Kleptocracy is different from plutocracy (rule by the richest) and oligarchy (rule by a small elite).
I reject kleptocracy.
Monarchy is a form of government where a monarch, such as a king or queen (or regent), holds the highest position, often for life and through hereditary succession. Monarchies can be absolute, granting unlimited power to the ruler, or constitutional, where a monarch's powers are limited by laws and an elected government handles governing. Key features include hereditary succession, symbolic representation by the monarch, and, in absolute monarchies, centralized authority.
I am opposed to the United States becoming monarchy like. I support another country's right to a constitutional monarchy. I am opposed to absolute monarchy.
Oligarchy is a form of government in which power rests with a small number of people (oligarchs). Oligarchs are generally are characterized by having titles of nobility or great wealth.
I reject oligarchy.
A plutocracy or plutarchy is a society that is ruled or controlled by people of great wealth or income. Unlike most political systems, plutocracy is not rooted in any established political philosophy.
I reject plutocracy.
"Pro-choice" refers to supporting a person's right to control their own body, which includes the legal right to choose abortion. This stance is rooted in the belief of individual liberty and bodily autonomy, advocating for safe and legal access to induced abortion as well as medications and services affecting procreation for either gender.
I support an emancipated and rational person's right to control his or her own body.
"Pro-life" has come to mean opposing induced abortion and (for some) euthanasia.
I support an emancipated and rational person's right to control his or her own body.
A republic is a state in which political power rests with the public (i.e. citizens), through their representatives. The United States is a constitutional democratic republic.
I support maintaining the United States as a democratic republic limited by its Constitution.
"Socialism" has many often-opposing meanings. It is used disparagingly as an ideological catchphrase for the Soviet-type planned economies in the former Soviet Union, Eastern Bloc, and some countries of southeast Asia. It is used admiringly of some countries of Scandinavia and Europe. In the theoretical sense, Socialism is an economic and political philosophy that advocates for social ownership of the means of producing goods and services, which can take various forms, such as government, collective, cooperative, or employee ownership. In this theoretical sense one could describe school buses and highway snow plows as "socialist".
Because it is ambiguous, I believe it fair to ask the user of the word to describe its meaning.
"States' Rights" are the rights and powers held by individual U.S. states rather than by the federal government. A state's rights are granted by the Constitution's tenth amendment: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
I support states' rights.
The unitary executive is a political theory which holds that president of the United States has sole and complete authority over the executive branch with the ability to neglect the lawful mandates of Congress. This Wikipedia article states the pro and con arguments.
I reject the unitary executive theory.
